Flowers


The flowers series was made whilst artist in residence for the Fal River Festival 2010, and was based in the area surrounding the King Harry Ferry. For the residency I made a series of walks around the area, and in particular around the creeks from Devoran to Feock.

These areas are filled with expensive homes with waterside views. Often empty for most of the year, it is during spring that they are being made ready for the summer season. The presence of flowers in the work comes to symbolise the life of these villages, often seeming dead over the winter, with little or no resident population, yet springing into action once the sun comes out.

The images above represent the flowers that one comes to associate with this area. The 1970's flower arrangements are precise and clean, yet fake, not reflecting the nature that they are thought to represent. The flowers series aims to be a more democratic view of the area, looking at those flowers that are untamed and do not fit with the jet washed facade...
