Tramway

Tramway looks at the area surrounding the former mineral tramways that used to run through the mining landscape of mid Cornwall. This is a landscape that has been overcome by mining and heavy industry, with some of the lowest incomes in the region. There is however a feeling of community and heritage, and it is this that interests me. The series looks at this landscape through my eyes; and as part of this enquiry I collect and record the world as I experience it. The work consists of images that are reflective of my time here, and that can describe that experience to others.

This work is based upon a unique view of the world around me; of being acutely aware of ones surroundings, whilst actively exploring them. The aim is to allow the viewer access to this place too. By focusing on the vernacular details, and not the clichéd views usually associated with these particular places, it is possible to resurrect some subconscious feeling of belonging. It is the apparent familiarity of these images that allows for easier access; by moving between series and collections there will be an experience for the viewer, which reflects my own photographic exploration.

The installation of Tramway is significant, and aims to enhance the experience of the viewer. By moving between scale and format the viewer is asked to appreciate the smaller details. They must take time to walk around and discover the landscape themselves, piecing together in their own minds eye what goes on in between the pictures.
